according to positive discipline one of the most important tools to model mutual respect and help your children develop their own capabilities are open-ended questions this past week i talked about 3 strategies to help you develop a positive relationship today with your children in this short video and one my fav tools is "what?" and "how?" open-ended questions simply put curiosity questions: * engage children in problem-solving by asking their opinion, thoughts, feelings, or their ideas to brainstorm solutions * develop intrinsic motivation or motivation from within to shift from a consequence to a solution-orientated parenting focus * show that you respect your children's input and trust in their wisdom to come up with solutions to common problems, struggles, misbehavior and negative patterns in your home * develop partnership in shared decision-making * equal cooperation because children who have an active role in expectations, transitions, and routines are much, much more likely to cooperate with small children, you can start using open-ended questions simply by asking: "what comes next after your shoes?" "how do you want to set the table?" and also engaging their input: "how do you want to spend the afternoon?" "what's your favorite activity at the park?" with small children you may have to suggest possible choices or get them started on the brainstorming when older children misbehave, make a mistake, need redirection or are processing a real-life situation curiosity questions are: a #1 to get them back on track without having to threaten or reward "what do you think should happen next?" "how would you like to fix the program?" "what did you learn from the situation?" "how can you two figure this out on your own?" curiosity questions are democracy in the making they teach children how to solve real-life problems and send the message that you and your children are on the same team while also developing intrinsic motivation from within curiosity questions can take a bit of practice to use hop over here to post a question or share your experience with our community or schedule a 1 on 1 parenting empowerment exploratory session with me to learn more what do think about about open-ended curiosity questions? :) You Got This Power of Curiosity Questions.

your parenting challenges are my parenting challenges your neighbor's struggles you can relate the mom yelling at her child in the store she is all of us we are one the joys smiles tears frustrations the high's + the low's we all share we are one our evolution as parents today is both uniquely individual + deeply universal we are the ties that bind us to a better world a bright future for the human race "we are only as strong as the weakest link" so the saying goes this week we saw once again how weak the weakest link of humanity is what happens when the bond of human connection + respect for life are broken my old friend from high school is a teacher at marjory stoneman douglas high school she was on lock-down with her students for 4 hours during this past week's school tragedy while her students rise up in advocacy demanding positive change and gun reform i think about the child who took the lives what happens in a world where a children is so broken? what has happened to a child to make him that broken? every american school shooter shares these common denominators: adverse childhood experiences isolation and loneliness for a small minority of our most vulnerable white male children the combination of childhood abuse, isolation, loneliness, and mental illness - and access to weapons of war - are at the root of unprecedented violence the victims + the families in the latest school shooting - and the shooter himself remind me we truly are all one people the safety of teachers and children everywhere is dependent upon all children growing up in safety with strong and healthy secure attachment bonds to their caregivers the role of parents + teachers today has never been more important and having all the support in the world to raise loving and respectful children is everything we truly are one people one human race parents together strengthening one another the next generation to help ensure a foundation of safety - not just in our own children's lives- but in *every* child's life this is a #1 way to end the cycle of violence and ensure we thrive as a people Wishing us all the power of positive action |

Hi friends, I write from the heart to tell my life story, and the story of those in my neighborhood called life. Research shows that our children's emotional & mental health is contingent upon us parents being able to tell our life story, or "coherent narrative." This is my coherent narrative, my life story in the making, with some of what I love in life too. My goal is to share my life in a way that is real, uplifting & positive- sometimes serious, sometimes fun. In my practice, I inspire parents to empowerment through reclaiming our life stories and learning respectful discipline. My work is my offering to our children- our future. Wishing you all a happy family! Archives
